Our Lady of Good Counsel CES Closing Ceremony
Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Elementary School is closing in June 2017 as there is a new facility opening in September 2017. The community of Sharon is very proud of our school at 53 Morton Avenue and we will gather to celebrate the wonderful memories on Saturday, June 3, 2017 with a Mass and School Open House. The entire school community, including current and former students, staff, parents and guardians, are invited to attend both events.
The Mass, celebrated by Father Roy Roberts will commence at 10:00 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Seton Parish Church (17955 Leslie Street, Newmarket, ON L3Y 9A4).
After the Mass we will have guest speakers address the audience.
Following the Mass and speakers at the church we will have an Open House at Our Lady of Good Counsel CES (53 Morton Avenue, Sharon, ON L0G 1V0). The Open House will commence at noon and conclude at 2:00 p.m. At the Open House there will be visual and video displays of the past 58 years of OLGC and finger foods will be served. This will provide an opportunity for people to mingle, reflect and reminisce.
Since 1959, Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Elementary School has served the Sharon community with pride. In the early 1950’s Bishop Francois Morrocco introduced the idea of co-op housing. By 1955, 23 families purchased building lots along Morton Avenue. Most of the homes were completed by 1957 where people worked together to build houses combined with their regular jobs in Toronto. At first the children of these homeowners were bussed to St. John’s in Newmarket for school. The co-op group saw the need for a school in Sharon and formed the East Gwillimbury Separate School Board. In the fall of 1959, Our Lady of Good Counsel opened with 2 classrooms and 61 students. As the population continued to grow the school was expanded to 6 classrooms in 1965 and finally in 1981 it received an additional 5 classrooms, a library and gymnasium. Today the school serves 271 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8.
